Mr Taylor, who played outside-left, died suddenly while on holiday with his friends.

He played 73 league games for the club from 1963-65, scoring eight goals, helping them finish 11th and 16th in the Third Division.

Signed from Rotherham by the legendary Arthur Rowley as a replacement for Graham French in 1963, Mr Taylor was ever present in the FA Cup run to the fifth round replay in 1965, playing alongside favourites such as Alan Boswell, Peter Dolby and Peter Broadbent before being sold to Port Vale in 1965 for £3,000.

Starting with hometown team Walsall, where he made 77 appearances and scored 17 goals, he earned a £10,000 move to Birmingham City in 1958 but broke his leg in 1961. But that didn't stop him making 316 League appearances in a career spanning over 16 years, winning promotion to the Third Division in 1968.

Mr Taylor then dropped into non-league to enjoy spells with Kidderminster Harriers, Bromsgrove Rovers, Welshpool Town, Oswestry Town and Darlaston.

A Shrewsbury fan, Northwestman Conference, posted on fans' messageboard blueandamber: "I'm old enough to have seen him play! Skilful winger."
