Emergency vehicles and delivery drivers will still be able to access the road although they have been advised that a "banksman", a person to direct the vehicle safely, may be required.

Workers have been using a mini digger to open up the hole in an attempt to discover the cause of the subsidence.

They started work at at around 11am on Monday.

The hole is currently around one metre wide, three metres long, and a metre and a half deep.

It is understood that further, and more extensive excavation work will be required on Tuesday to find out what caused the problem.

Extra and more substantial fencing is also expected to be put in place while the work is carried out.

Shropshire Council has advised that access to the area will be limited.

A statement posted on its website said: "Please be advised that due to subsidence of the highway in Pride Hill, Shrewsbury at the junction with Butcher Row, it has become necessary to close this section to vehicular traffic until further notice.

"Access up to this point will still be available for some deliveries and for emergency response vehicles via Fish Street, St Marys Street and Mardol Head – although a 'banksman' may be required due to the high number of pedestrians using this route."
