M54 lane closed after road cracks discovered

A stretch of the M54 in Shropshire was down to a single lane today after a problem arose during overnight roadworks.

It meant the eastbound lane between junctions 4, near Stafford Park, and junction 3, near Cosford, was closed.

Richard Gulliver, service delivery manager for Highways England, said: "Unfortunately we can only have one lane of this stretch of the M54 open after cracks emerged in concrete surrounding manhole covers on the road.

"We are of course working hard to establish exactly what has caused this problem.

"We know there is already frustration at the over-running of works on the M54, and we are sorry for this further inconvenience. But safety is paramount for road users and our workforce, so we cannot open the road until it is safe to do so.

"Our work at junctions 3 to 5 of the M54 is due to finish in mid-July, and will improve journeys for drivers, with a new road surface which will improve safety and greatly reduce the noise of traffic."
