Plans for new Lidl store in Welshpool thrown out

Plans to open a new discount supermarket in Welshpool which would have created up to 40 new jobs have been thrown out by planning chiefs.

Lidl wanted to open a new store in Mill Lane, opposite the town's Tesco superstore.

But members of Powys County Council's planning committee refused the application on the basis that it would take business away from the town and there was not sufficient parking on the proposed site.

Speaking at a meeting of the planning committee in Welshpool yesterday, council clerk Robert Robinson said: "The town council is not against the plans, but feels it is not the right place for it.

"Loading with lorries in such a tight location worries the council, as does the wall along the canal – an important part of Welshpool. The council also believes the old Co-op supermarket in Berriew Street should have been filled before a new site is opened."

"There was also a worry Oldford residents would become disenfranchised."

Mr Robinson said Welshpool Town Council had offered to meet with Lidl on numerous occasions to explain its objections, but the chain had refused his requests.

Members of the committee voiced their opinion that there was not sufficient parking places planned for the development. Councillor Bob Mills said: "Competition is a good thing, but I sometimes wonder about these developments. There will be 65 parking spaces. Is this enough? I see what it is like at the Lidl in Newtown and it causes traffic to back up to the main road. It could be the same here."

It could cause friction with access to the pub next to the proposed site."

Councillor Peter Harris said he did not like the design of the building.

"It is one of the most boring buildings I have ever seen. Welshpool is a beautiful town, this won't help."

Councillor Michael Williams added: "I don't think we should take into account the competition to other companies when we assess this.

"Competition is a good thing and people will vote with their feet, it is the way of the world.

"But here there will be insufficient parking spaces."

Councillor Linda Corfield said: "This will take people out of the town centre. Why has Lidl not been more pragmatic and met with Welshpool Town Council and Powys County Council to discuss our concerns? This is a wasted opportunity."

Members voted 14-1 in favour of refusing the plans. There was one abstention.
