The Henley Road cemetery could be used to meet the demand from the Muslim community for places to bury loved ones in the south of the county.

Ludlow Town Council, which manages the cemetery, will consider changing its policy to allow for burials of all faiths to take place. It has asked for more information about the Muslim community's needs before making a final decision.

Town clerk Gina Wilding, speaking after Monday's town council meeting, said: "The mood was positive. If we feel the need is significant we would like to address that but members just felt they needed more information.

"We do have a new area of the cemetery that potentially could be available for multi-faith burials," she added.

The matter was raised by Eric Williams, clerk of Craven Arms Town Council, as the area has a growing Muslim population but there is currently nowhere in Shropshire for Islamic followers to be buried outside of the Telford area.

There are about 150 Muslims in Ludlow, Craven Arms and Church Stretton.
