The man tumbled into the well, which is an indoor feature at Moreton Park Hotel, near Chirk, at about 9.15am.

Jamie Arrowsmith, spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: "The patient had fallen into the well. He'd managed to get himself out and was sitting by the well on our arrival.

"An ambulance crew checked him over to make sure he was okay - and all's well that ends well!"

Following the initial report, fire crews from Oswestry and Wellington were mobilised, but were stood down once the man managed to free himself.

A spokeswoman for Shropshire Fire & Rescue service said: "We were called by the ambulance service to reports of a 50-year-old male stuck in a well.

"He was released prior to our arrival and we left him in the care of the ambulance staff."

The hotel declined to comment.
