Two coachloads of people left the county to join tens of thousands of others in the anti-austerity march in the capital.

Bill Hammond, a member of the National Union of Teachers from Shrewsbury, claimed the event was "hugely positive".

He said: "Two coachloads with people from all over Shrewsbury, Oswestry and Telford left the county for the march.

"We walked through the capital and ended up in Parliament Square where we listened to talks from various people including Len McCluskey, general secretary of the Unite union. It was key that we made our feelings heard and it felt a very positive message was delivered to the Government."

A number of celebrities and politicians joined the march including Russell Brand, Green MP Caroline Lucas, Labour leadership hopeful Jeremy Corbyn and singer Charlotte Church.

Organisers claimed up to 250,000 people took to the streets for the march.

Families, students and campaigners from across the country took part in the march, which made its way from the financial district to Parliament. Charlotte Church, whose personal wealth is believed to be about £100 million, has been a vocal critic of the Tories.

She said: "Austerity isn't the only way. It is essentially unethical, unfair and unnecessary."

A Treasury spokeswoman said it was continuing to cut the deficit, which was the best way to deliver economic security.
