A series of overnight closures to resurface the A5 between Shrewsbury and Telford has begun.

The programme started last night and will last until August 23.

It will include work on the slip roads of the M54 at junction seven for Wellington in both directions.

The road will be closed from 8pm to 6am between the Preston Boats roundabout and junction seven of the M54, and diversions will be put in place.

Alistair Harris, spokesman for Highways England, said: "We are making big improvements to drivers' journeys along the A5, with new high-friction surfacing which offers extra grip to improve safety and enable smoother journeys. At the same time, we'll be repainting road markings and renewing linings and studs.

"We've programmed our work to take place overnight to cause minimum disruption to drivers.

"We understand some late-night or early-morning journeys may be affected and we apologise for any inconvenience, but we have deliberately scheduled this crucial work outside peak times so disruption to the majority of drivers is minimal."

He added: "We don't expect this work to cause severe delays, but we'd advise everyone to plan in advance, check the latest traffic updates, and allow extra time if necessary."

Meanwhile, Shropshire Council has revealed that essential road maintenance due to take place in Shrewsbury on Sunday has had to be postponed due to "unforeseen resource issues".

Shoplatch was due to close to traffic on the next two Sundays, starting this Sunday, to allow essential drainage and gas works for Mardol House to be carried out. It was a move which had angered some traders in the area who said they would be left out of pocket.

Details on when work will resume will be announced shortly.
