Six arrested and one in hospital after armed police respond to assault with blade in Newport

Six people were arrested after armed police and a helicopter were out in force to deal with a serious assault in Newport last night, which involved a bladed weapon and saw one man taken to hospital.

Armed police descended upon Vineyard Road where the assault is believed to have happened.

Six men, aged 17, 18, 24, 27,30 and 56, have been arrested on suspicion of GBH and are all currently in custody.

A police spokesman said: "The victim a man in his 30's sustained serious injuries to his hand as well as some other slight injuries, believed to be caused by a bladed instrument. He is being treated at Princess Royal Hospital.

"The arrests were supported by armed police due to reports of weapons being involved. A helicopter was also in attendance."

Residents were told to stay indoors and away from windows by officers as the helicopter hovered over the Norbroom Park and Hampton Drive area of the town at about 7pm.

The administrator of the Newport Shropshire News, Views and idle chit chat Facebook group posted: "Armed police everywhere. Residents told to stay away from windows and keep away from area."

An investigation is underway and there is no wider threat to the public. Anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to contact police on 101 quoting incident number 522 of 28th May.
