A5 between Shrewsbury and Telford set for night closures for £4.2m works

The A5 between Shrewsbury and Telford will be closed overnight for seven weeks from Monday to allow £4.2 million resurfacing work to be carried out.

The road will be shut at night in both directions between the Preston Boats island on the outskirts of Shrewsbury and junction seven of the M54 at Wellington.

Preparation work was carried out briefly yesterday and one lane of the eastbound carriageway was partially closed for a few hours while inspections took place.

It comes just months after major work reconfiguring the Emstrey and Preston Boats islands was completed several months behind schedule.

The main resurfacing work will take place from the end of the M54 where it changes to the A5. Both carriageways will be fully resurfaced. It is hoped the work will be completed by August 23.

A spokesman for Highways England said the work will be carried out on the westbound side towards Shrewsbury first, and then the eastbound section.

He said: "Works will be carried out between 8pm to 6am with one weekend closure which will entail 24-hour working for the M54 junction seven westbound on-slip.

"There will be temporary traffic lights on Holyhead Road required when surfacing the eastbound on and westbound off-slip road at M54 junction seven, which is estimated will take place over three weekends."

During the closures diversions will be put in place along the A5223 and the B5061 for the M54, and for the A5 along Holyhead Road, the B5061 and B4380 to rejoin the A5 at Emstrey island.

Earlier this year a report showed that four per cent of A roads and 10 per cent of B and C roads in Shropshire require maintenance work.

The figures, which form part of the Government's road conditions in England report, also showed 19 per cent of Shropshire's unclassified roads require maintenance work for the period 2013/14.
