Meet Jackson – this lucky dog has been reunited with his owner after falling into a slurry pit.

It was a narrow escape for Jackson who had run off exploring during a walk when he fell into the pit with no way out.

Lorraine Gillan, 60, was walking with Jackson in Fauls Green, near Whitchurch, when she decided to let him off his lead to explore.

She said: "But then just a couple of minutes later I looked up and couldn't see Jackson. I thought he might be hiding in the bushes or something. I was level with the slurry pit and I heard this "glump, glump" noise. I have heard about dogs falling in them before so I was very worried."

Jackson, a two-year-old Parson Russell Terrier, was splashing around trying to get out.

Despite Miss Gillan's best efforts to hook him out with her walking stick, she couldn't reach him.

She said: "I saw another villager walking and I asked him to come and help. He was able to pull him out. If he had not been there then my dog would have drowned in the pit before my eyes.

"Jackson was covered in slime but hasn't been ill or had any adverse symptoms since."

Now, Ms Gillan is hoping to raise awareness of the dangers of slurry pits.

She said: "They need to be properly fenced off. We all know what kids are like, they might see it and want to have a look at what is inside a slurry pit.

"But also in the summer they have a crust on top and a lot of people see it and think it has a solid surface. That is how accidents occur."
