A 71-acre solar farm generating enough electricity to power more than 4,000 homes could be built on the outskirts of a Shropshire village, it has been revealed.

The 15MW park has been proposed for a site on Harriott Hayes Lane in Albrighton. A full planning application is expected to be submitted by Buckinghamshire-based developers Belectric UK this summer.

It would stand as the most recent medium-to-large-scale proposal for solar parks in the Shropshire countryside.

The solar modules would stand at a maximum height of three to 3.5 metres, would not create noise and after 25 to 30 years would be removed and the land returned to its original agricultural use, according to developers.

Members of the public have been invited to share their views on the Albrighton solar farm, which would power about 4,400 homes, at a consultation event at 8pm on Thursday at Albrighton Village Hall.

The solar farm would be based 75 metres north of Harriott Hayes Lane and 830 metres west of Codsall Wood near Wolverhampton.

Emma Brosnahan, project development manager at Belectric Solar Ltd, said: "We are in the pre-application stage and invite residents to a public consultation. The site will produce enough clean electricity to power 4,400 homes annually."

Councillor Peter Illes, of Albrighton Parish Council, said residents received a leaflet about the public consultation event on Monday. He said: "Certainly the people I have spoken to say they would rather have that than a wind turbine.

"Most people seem to think they are reasonably eco-friendly and they have a finite life so after so many years the land returns to its original use."
