It's better known as the birthplace of history's most important Charles - Darwin - but Shrewsbury is about to find itself on the map for another Charles - The Charleston.

The town has joined the internet craze 'I Charleston the World' with a stunning video featuring more than 50 dancers performing the iconic dance in some of Shrewsbury's most recognisable locations.

The Dingle, the Square, Shrewsbury Castle and Pengwern Boathouse all feature as backdrops for the video, which was produced by local Charleston teacher Sarah Bright.

Sarah explained: "The idea is that swing dance groups make a video of their group dancing the Charleston in their town or city.

"Groups from around the world have joined in, making a video and sharing it with everyone else."

Sarah said that they had fought the weather to produce the video over three days of filming and that she was delighted at the result as it showcases the performers and Shrewsbury itself.

She said: "It was great fun because everyone was so excited but we were battling with the elements - the first day it was raining so we had to wait for a few dry minutes to get some filming in.

"I was addicted to the weather report waiting for the sunshine so we could get going.

"Local people really got on board – the Sabrina Boat, the Libertine, the Castle - all the locals really welcoming being part of it which was great."

Sarah said that the people of Shrewsbury had enjoyed the spectacle of the dancing although some people had carried on regardless.

She said: "People were obviously quite intrigued and startled but it was quite funny because we had people who would not stop for it so you can see them strolling past in the video, one of them with their dog.

"We were filming on the bridge and they just kept walking past."

The Charleston has remained popular and Sarah said the key to its success is its light-hearted nature.

She said: "It is very accessible to everyone, to men and women, and it does not have any limitations with age - we have people in their early 20s through to their early 60s.

"The style is very cheeky, flamboyant, and does not take itself too seriously, people just feel they want to smile when doing it. It brings out the light hearted side of you when you dance and really encourages people to show character and express themselves."

The video has already attracted more than 3,000 plays on YouTube, and Sarah said she was delighted with the result.

She said: "We were absolutely thrilled. As we were doing it, it felt so segmented but when we watched it as one video it was really polished and did the town justice and the dancers as well.

"It just felt like a really happy uplifting event, we are really chuffed."

Sarah will also be holding a beginners Charleston class at Morris Hall from 7.45pm to 8.45pm, on Monday, June 1.

The course runs for eight weeks and costs £40 for all eight sessions or £6 individually.
