Roadworks across region lifted to ease holiday chaos

Roadworks will be lifted from the vast majority of motorways and major roads across the country this weekend to help bank holiday travellers.

Almost 400 lane-miles of roadworks on motorways and A roads will be removed or suspended by 6am tomorrow, highways bosses say.

Highways England says it always removes as many roadworks as possible at busy times like the late spring bank holiday, and roadworks are usually reinstated on the Tuesday after the break.

But this year, in light of recently-announced industrial action affecting rail passengers, officials say it is not planning to re-instate roadworks until 6am next Thursday.

Among the works which will be completed before the bank holiday are 2.2 miles of roadworks between junction two and three of the M54 near Albrighton.

One mile of roadworks on the A5 near Gledrid and one mile of roadworks on the A5 near Oswestry will also be completed for the bank holiday.

Meanwhile, 5.6 miles of roadworks will be lifted between junction 10 and junction 10a of the M6 near Wolverhampton for the weekend.

Simon Sheldon-Wilson, director of customer operations at Highways England, said: "We are working with Network Rail and others to manage the impact of any industrial action on our customers.

"Motorways and major routes are likely to be even busier than usual if the planned industrial action goes ahead as travellers switch from rail to roads.

"We strongly urge drivers to consider if their journeys are necessary."
