Scott George Burton, 22, of Allen Gardens, admitted assaulting his mother, shoplifting, criminal damage and two charges of assaulting police officers in the course of their duties.

Yesterday magistrates at Telford sentenced him to four months for each assault to run concurrently and a two-month sentence for the criminal damage also to run concurrently.

He was given a restraining order not to contact or visit his mother until further notice and ordered to pay a £80 victim surcharge and criminal court charge of £150.

Mrs Katie Price said that events had begun when Burton had stolen beer from the nearby One Stop Shop on May 15 and his mother had reported him to the shop. Later in the evening she went upstairs to see if Burton wanted any food but was greeted with abuse.

As she came downstairs she could hear smashing sounds from the room and left the house where she could see the defendant leaning out of the upstairs window brandishing a knife saying that he would slash his mother's face.

Mrs Price added that the defendant had then come downstairs brandishing the knife at his mother and her husband.

"She wasn't sure that the defendant was aware of his actions and feared that he had the potential to stab her," said Mrs Price.

After the police arrived and arrested Burton, his mother surveyed the house and found that the fridge had been stabbed and pierced right through in two places, while upstairs a mirror and Kindle Fire device had been destroyed.

Mrs Price said Burton continued to insult officers after his arrest, at one point spitting at the back of the head of one constable.

While at the police station Burton requested a hot drink which he then threw in the face of the officer who brought it, but luckily did not cause any injuries, said Mrs Price.

"The defendant is clearly in need of some assistance," said Mrs Price, however as he no longer had an address there was little that the probation service could offer him.

For Burton, Mr Paul Nicholas said: "He always presents himself as a very respectful, decent, polite young man. It's completely at odds with the way he behaved towards his parents."

He noted how Burton had held his head in his hands as the charges and case was outlined in court as demonstrating that the defendant had difficulty in recognising what he had done.

However, as well as the drinking "he's in the very early throes of drug misuse which is indicative of the way he behaved," he added. Mr Nicholas said Burton wanted to return to live with his mother.
