The chocolate brown toy poodle called Emi suffered a chipped eye socket, broken pelvis and three broken ribs before her death.

Seven-month-old Toast, a Ragdoll cat, had injuries consistent with being kicked or stamped on, Shrewsbury Magistrates Court was told.

The injuries to the cat were only discovered after it was exhumed.

Quade Roy Adams, 22, of Station Road, Weston Rhyn, near Oswestry, denied two charges of causing unnecessary suffering to a cat and one of causing unnecessary suffering to a dog. But he was found guilty by district judge Nigel Cadbury.

The judge heard that the two animals both died on February 13 last year.

Their owner Anika Kloska told the court she and the animals had been living with Adams and said he had been violent to them when they messed in the house.

"On one occasion he picked Toast up, hit him on the head and threw him to the ground," she said.

Mr Paulinus Barnes, prosecuting, said staff at Castle Vets, Chirk, contacted the RSPCA about the dog and a post mortem revealed the injuries. RSPCA Inspector Chris Dunbar said he and a colleague went to find the body of the cat.

Post mortems showed that the injuries to the dog had been consistent with blows by a blunt instrument. The cat had suffered abdominal injures and a ruptured spleen consistent with being kicked or stamped on.

Adams, who did not give evidence in court, had told Inspector Dunbar that after the animals messed in the house he gave them a shower. When he was drying them off with a hairdryer that they started to have difficulty breathing, he claimed.

Adams said that he could only think they had died by inhaling chemicals from the cleaner that he had used on the shower.

District Judge Cadbury adjourned sentence until Tuesday and granted Adams unconditional bail. He warned him that he could face immediate custody.
