Mr Wright said he wanted to thank residents for their support after losing his seat to Conservative Lucy Allan in last week's General Election.

Writing on his Facebook page Mr Wright said: "It has been both a privilege and an honour to represent my home town of Telford in Parliament for the last 14 years. I am proud of what we have achieved.

"I had hoped that our programme to build a fairer society, run for the many and not the few, would change the direction of our country. The voters rejected that and I respect that decision.

"I want to say a huge thank-you to all those who did put their trust in me on May 7 and to all those who have helped me, supported me and lent me their support over the last 14 years."

Lucy Allan, who was elected by a majority of 730, was at Westminster yesterday to hear a speech to backbenchers by David Cameron. The Prime Minister met the new Telford MP as part of a photocall with those who were newly elected last week, before taking to Twitter to confirm the make-up of his new management team.

Speaking about the new cabinet ministers, she said: "I welcome the new appointments and I'm delighted to see real talent being rewarded based on merit.

"I've always had huge respect for Priti Patel who I'm sure will do an excellent job as Employment Minister."

Meanwhile, Shrewsbury's Ukip candidate Suzanne Evans will not be taking over the leadership of the party after the party's top brass rejected the resignation of current chief Nigel Farage.

Mr Farage announced in the wake of his defeat in South Thanet that he would quit the post, as he had repeatedly promised to do if he failed to enter the Commons.

But Ukip chairman Steve Crowther said the party's national executive committee (NEC) believed the election campaign had been a "great success".
