Transport Minister Edwina Hart announced the funding for the extension to meet expected increased demand from the new Cambrian Line rail services.

New peak hourly trains between Aberystwyth and Shrewsbury for most of the day will start next month.

After meeting with the Mid Wales Railways Implementation Group about expected passenger numbers, The Minister has provided cash for Welshpool Town Council to extend parking and include an extra 25 spaces.

Mrs Hart said: "We expect the extra services between Aberystwyth and Shrewsbury will increase demand at Welshpool so it is important we increase parking capacity at the station and encourage more people to park and ride. This investment demonstrates our commitment to supporting public transport, which is a vital way for many people, including some of the most vulnerable in our society, to access jobs and services particularly in rural areas."

Four additional return services will operate between Aberystwyth and Shrewsbury, Mondays to Saturdays, with hourly services for peak morning and afternoon times. There will also be two new return Sunday services, and an improvement to evening services on the Cambrian Coast between Barmouth and Pwllheli.

Welshpool Town Councillor Trevor Roberts, vice-chairman of the Mid Wales Railways Group, said: "There has been a great response to the extra train services between Aberystwyth and Shrewsbury and as such demand for these services will be high. This funding will not only help us to meet this demand but actively encourage people to use public transport. We are very thankful to the Welsh Government and the Transport Minister for their continued support to improve public transport in Mid Wales."
