Fury at three-month overnight closure proposal for A5

A section of the A5 in Shropshire will be closed overnight for three months for roadworks, it has been revealed.

The Gledrid roundabout between Oswestry and Chirk will be shut during the night between June and September for improvement works.

The news has been greeted with anger by a local councillor, who fears the works will cause serious hold-ups on the region's roads and cause congestion in Chirk due to traffic being redirected.

Councillor Terry Evans, Wrexham County Borough Council member for Chirk South, said he expects the town to be brought to a standstill during the work.

He said: "It is absolutely worrying news for the region, especially those of us who live in Chirk. It is going to bring chaos to the area.

"It only takes a couple of people to pull up for a minute on the side of the road in the centre of town for tailbacks to form and this will do far worse than that."

The roundabout, which was resurfaced in April 2014 at a cost of £59,000, has long been the source of frustration for motorists, with many voicing concern about the layout of lanes.

Three years ago a campaign was launched after people approaching from the Oswestry direction were left confused by what lane to use while travelling towards Wrexham.

A Highways England spokesman confirmed "improvement works" were being carried out. But he could not yet confirm details about how it will affect road users.

The work at Gledrid comes after Highways England confirmed it will be closing the nearby Mile End Roundabout on the A5 in Oswestry overnight for "tweaks" just four months after being opened.

The £4 million roundabout will be closed overnight until May 9 between 8pm and 6am for white lining work to be done.

Highways England said the work is needed after driver behaviour was analysed at the roundabout.
