Michael Jones was driving on the wrong side of the road with no lights on at 12.30am, a court heard.

He smashed into the front of a car being driven by Geraint Evans. But rather than stopping, Jones drove off before leaving his car in a car park and going to bed.

Police officers called by Mr Evans managed to follow a trail of scrapes in the road caused by the damage to Jones's car, which led them to his home.

Jones, 27, of Bron y Gaer, Llanfyllin, admitted drink driving, dangerous driving and failing to stop after an accident.

Welshpool Magistrates Court heard when Jones was breathalysed he gave a reading of 99 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Magistrates declined jurisdiction of the case because they said their maximum sentence of six months' jail was not sufficient. They ordered reports on Jones, who will be sentenced at Mold Crown Court on May 14.

Mrs Helen Tench, prosecuting, said: "It was 12.30am when Geraint Evans was driving on the B4580 at Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant.

He suddenly came across a car coming towards him on the wrong side of the road with no headlights on.

"There was an impact and as Mr Evans, who was in the car with his wife and daughter, got out to exchange details, the Volkswagen Passat being driven by the defendant drove off."

Mr Owain Jones, for Jones, said his client had shown remorse and had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity.
