The RSPCA has received a report about the discovery in the Rowan Road area of Market Drayton.

It has been reported that three cats were taken ill after it is believed they ate the tuna.

Constable Mick Sturland, of West Mercia Police's Market Drayton safer neighbourhood team, said the incident was reported on Wednesday.

He said: "The cats were taken to the vets who confirmed the tuna was laced with anti-freeze. We called the RSPCA who are now dealing with the incident."

Last year cat owners in the Telford area were placed on alert by RSPCA officers following the deaths of four animals due to suspected anti-freeze or rat poisoning.

The RSPCA say that in 2012 they took 14 calls about anti-freeze poisoning in Shropshire, while in 2013 they took six and in 2014 they had six calls.

Sara Howlett, a spokeswoman for the RSPCA, said: "The RSPCA is deeply concerned about any suspected poisonings, but especially one where evidence suggests it may be deliberate."
