New date fixed for Shrewsbury world coracle event

Teams who capsize in this year's World Coracle Championships should find the water a little warmer after organisers switched the event to September.

The event, one of the county's most entertaining charity competitions, raises money for Macmillan Cancer Care, and will now take place on Friday, September 11, instead of in June.

Held on the River Severn at Pengwern Boat Club in Shrewsbury, teams of four are challenged to make it back and forth across the river four times in the fastest time possible.

Helen Knight, fundraising manager for Macmillan in Shropshire, said the change of date would not only make it more comfortable for some of the less skilled participants but would also allow more businesses to join in.

She added: "The reason it has moved is because there are a lot of other things going on in June and also the water is definitely warmer in September so when people fall in it will not be as cold.

"Also by changing it to a Friday we are hoping to attract more companies to take part in it as a corporate event to help us raise as much money as possible."

Last year's championships proved hugely successful, raising more than £15,000 for the charity.

Mrs Knight said the event had provided huge entertainment for competitors and spectators alike. She said: "It is a very good fundraiser for us and we usually raise a considerable amount of money on the day. It is definitely a fun event and it is something people can get involved in, from families and friends to businesses, and it is a really great day out.

"Spectators are more than welcome to come along and support the competitors and there will be a barbecue, a Pimms tent, and of course the bar at the Pengwern. It is very much a spectator sport as much as for those taking part."

Mrs Knight said the event raises money for a worthwhile local cause and would provide the opportunity for "team building" for businesses which want to compete.

She said: "I think it is a great one to support. It is a good charity where the funds are banked locally so they help local people affected by cancer – and at the same time it is great for team building and generally having a nice day."

Entry costs £100 per team, with a request that teams raise a further £300 in sponsorship.
