The scholarship will provide the opportunity for University Centre Shrewsbury's first PhD research studentship –and around £13,000 a year.

Paul Kirkbright, University Centre Shrewsbury Deputy Provost, said the research would benefit Shropshire and the region.

He said: "This is another first for University Centre Shrewsbury, and is part of our aim to ensure that the institution has as much of a positive impact as possible.

"The studentship provides an opportunity to gain a PhD and undertake research which will benefit Shropshire and the region, while also having the potential to be of national importance."

Councillor Keith Barrow, Leader of Shropshire Council said: "Shropshire Council is fundamentally rethinking its role in supporting Shropshire's economy.

"This research is an absolutely crucial element of our review, bringing insight and experience from a national and global perspective.

"This is a great opportunity to gain unrivalled access to key decision makers, business leaders and to take a long-term view on how to maximise our potential."

The research will look at what factors are influencing the development of Shropshire's economy.

The student will be required to evaluate what can accelerate growth, and how this research may add to understanding of economic forces on a regional and national scale.
