Vet Andy Nelson organised the litter pick as part of National Community Clean-up Day.

The day aimed to tidy the town centre, high street and parks and marked the first day of spring.

Around 70 people turned up in Whitchurch on Saturday to help out.

Mr Nelson, of Leonard Brothers' Veterinary Centre, said: "The day all went to plan. Even the sun came out and the rain stayed away.

"Around 70 people came to help out and we collected about 120 to 140 bags of rubbish. It needed doing – littering is a big problem in Whitchurch. It looks a lot better now.

"A couple of the big businesses including Sainsbury's and Tesco got involved which was great. It was a really nice community feel and everyone came together.

"Around 20 children came out to help and there as well which was great as it teaches another generation about the impact of dropping litter.

"There were three and even four generations of families out to help so that was good. All ages got involved.

"We had six different routes to cover and we also targeted 'hot spots' that people had phoned in to tell us about. We started by the Civic Centre and then went on routes all over the town. It lasted about two hours.

"We have done several litter picks over the years. I think last time we collected more than 100 black bags of rubbish from the streets.

"Hopefully we will not have to do any more as there will be no more litter - but I expect we will need to organise more in the future."
