The Castlefields car park could be used as a tourist hub with plans submitted to turn the site into an area for 30 touring caravans and another 24 static vans for visitors.

The site would give views over beauty spots of the area including The Mere and developers said they hoped it would act as a boost in tourism for the area.

Lincoln McMullan, chair of Ellesmere Chamber of Trade and Commerce, said: "I think it is a great idea. They brought the plans to the whole chamber and presented their ideas and we fully supported it.

"If the field was going to be anything this is the best idea. It is really bringing something to the town rather than taking away from the town. They are not having any shops down there so it will mean tourists come into the town for cafes and things like that. It will be a really good thing for tourists and give them more accommodation and more choice as well."

Another site in the area has already been earmarked for development with a hotel, log cabin accommodation and spa and restaurant all proposed.

Mr McMullan said: "It means we will have one either side of the town and it will give people a real choice of where they want to stay. It would be a real boost for the town."

The plans were submitted to Shropshire Council by Euro Source and Find Limited, an Oswestry-based company, which specialises in selling touring and static caravans.

The developers said: "A development of this size within an established tourist area will only help to strengthen the local economy, create jobs."

The plans are available to view on the Shropshire Council website.
