The proposal, which would have seen about 14 homes built in Longden, was rejected by Shropshire Council.

But plans for 12 homes in Bicton Heath and eight in Montford were approved.

The outline application for Longden included two and three-bedroom detached and semi-detached houses.

Longden Parish Council objected, raising fears aboutaccess to the site, the number and size of the properties and added pressure on services. Shropshire Council also received more than 30 letters of objection.

Shropshire Councillor Andrew Bannerman said at Thursday's meeting in Shirehall: "Residents have a strong loyalty to their particular village. They want to remain as Longden village."

But Councillor Tudor Bebb added: "I am pretty sure if this is refused it will go to the inspector and the inspector will approve it."

The approved full planning application for a site off Pensfold in Bicton Heath includes eight terraced houses and a four-unit apartment building.

Shrewsbury Town Council objected saying the number of properties was inappropriate for the site and that traffic was already heavy in the area. There were 11 letters of objection.

Councillor Bannerman said: "It's a terrible plot. It's tempting to put anything on it which is dangerous."

But Councillor Bebb said: "It looks as though it needs to be developed."

The approved outline application for a site north west of Montford Bridge in Montford was opposed by the parish council and there were three letters of objection.

Councillor Miles Kenny expressed traffic fears but Councillor Bannerman said it was "a useless bit of land in agricultural sense".
