Finishing touches to Shrewsbury A5 roadworks under way

Finishing touches to roadworks which have caused major delays and frustrated motorists in Shropshire for months are now in the final stages.

The Highways Agency today said major construction work at the Emstrey and Preston Boats islands on the outskirts of Shrewsbury have now been completed, with just jobs like landscaping to do.

It said the landscaping, along with some resurfacing work on the road between the two islands, are due to be done overnight.

Joe Wilson, a spokesman from the Highways Agency, said: "Work has been pretty much completed now.

"There are a few things left to do like landscaping but I believe these will be done as part of overnight works.

"Because of the works which have been going on, it has been decided to resurface the road between the two islands.

"Again this is set to take place overnight so it won't really affect peak time traffic."

He said all work was still on course to be completed by the end of the month.

There had been reports from some motorists that there were problems with the new traffic lights yesterday. But Mr Wilson added: "The traffic lights were switched on last night and I'm told by the contractor down on site that they're working fine.

"If they appeared out of sync, the control system behind the signals may require a little time to embed taking account of traffic flows. This could be a 24-hour thing."

Shrewsbury MP Daniel Kawczynski has welcomed news that work is coming to an end and has described the project as an important investment for Shrewsbury.

The £8.4 million project was set to finish in December but has faced setbacks, including poor weather and technical issues.
