A fresh application to build 120 homes on the site of a failed bid for a new Sainsbury's supermarket has been submitted.

The outline application has been lodged by developers St Modwen for 7.8 acres of land to the west of Station Road in Newport. The scheme will be made up of detached, semi-detached and terraced houses but developers also want to keep 2.3 acres of the site as public open space, following feedback from a month-long consultation.

The plans have met with stiff opposition from members of the Save Newport Campaign, who say the land – which is owned by Telford & Wrekin Council – should be fully kept as public space.

David Parker, spokesman for the campaign group, said: "The Save Newport Campaign has discussed the issues and there are whole range of factors that lead us to believe that this land should not be developed for housing.

"If Telford & Wrekin Council look at their own statistics for open space for Newport people that were drawn up a couple of years ago we were desperately short of public open space and this will only exacerbate the shortfall.

"We believe we only have one option and that is to oppose this development and we will encourage all those people who have a real interest in the long-term future and quality of life of people in Newport to oppose this development.

"We have made our arguments as a campaign to Telford & Wrekin's planning department, we are encouraging others who have helped with the campaign over the last four years to contact the planning officers and help them understand where people in Newport are coming from and to oppose the development."

Developers St Modwen, however, say feedback from a "successful public consultation" has been fed into the scheme and 2.3 acres of land at the site will be dedicated to public open space.

An existing pond at the site will be retained along with a number of mature trees, hedgerows and landscaped areas. Developers are also proposing to build a new drainage pond.

Access to the site will be from a new roundabout junction on Station Road
