Shrewsbury man in court over woman's murder

A 45-year-old man from Shrewsbury has appeared in court charged with the murder of a woman whose body was found in business premises in the town on Christmas Eve.

Nigel Woolley, 45, of Buttington Road, Monkmoor, Shrewsbury, is accused of killing Julia Winifred Mercer, 47, who was found at Shrewsbury Dial-a-Ride's premises at Sundorne Trade Park.

He appeared at Telford Magistrates Court today for a short hearing where he spoke only to confirm his name and address.

Woolley was remanded in custody and will appear next at Shrewsbury Crown Court on March 16.

Mrs Mercer was a finance officer who also lived in Buttington Road.

An inquest into her death has been opened and adjourned until May 19, pending the outcome of police investigations.
