Letter: Do not judge person with a Motability car

In reply to the recent letters over Motability vehicles.  Although my husband does not have a 4x4, he has a Vauxhall Zafira on Motability as he is unable to lower himself into a standard car.

He was born with cerebral palsy leaving him with a gait and stiffness after being born premature and having a stroke.

Although finding it hard in life and being told by doctors he would never drive, he has his heavy goods vehicle, forklift, car and motorbike licence.

He also was able to play golf at county level.

At one point in his working life he held down a full time job and two part time jobs to support his family and never claimed any benefits.

A couple of years ago my husband was woken at night with severe agony in his spine.

After several painful examinations, it was discovered that the vertebrae in his spine have crumbled causing nerves to be trapped.

This makes life very uncomfortable, taking morphine for pain relief which also gives the side effect of nausea.

My husband would gladly give up his car for his health.

A Motability car is not a "freebie". You have to pay for the lease of the car. You can only be awarded a Motability car after stringent examinations.

Can I just say that you should not judge a person with a Motability car – disability comes in all forms despite my husband visually being disabled.
