Bad parking sparks Wellington bin day worries

Campaigners have been left shocked after the council said it might not be able to empty their bins due to cars blocking the way.

Members of the People First Party are taking a stand against bad parking in Wellington, which they say constitutes anti-social behaviour.

But last week residents received a letter from Telford & Wrekin Council saying that due to badly parked cars they may be unable to empty their bins as they can't get the lorry near their flats.

Kevin Tanner, from the group, said: "I'm just concerned that because of someone's bad parking our bins won't get collected and could cause health issues to the residents or even attract rats.

"It is not the residents who are causing the problem, it is people who work or use the nearby shops in the afternoon and evenings and at weekends.

"We are growing more and more frustrated as we have had double yellow lines put on the left hand side of the road, but people just ignore that and continue to park there.

"The letter did say that they will continue to empty the bins, but informed us that due to the parked cars they can't always get the truck down to do so.

"We were shocked when we got the letter as we have been campaigning for a while to get this issue sorted but no will help us.

"We have written to the Wrekin MP Mark Pritchard, who has said he is happy to support us and take the issue further."

The group wants to see more done by local authorities to fight parking problems.

To point out the problem it causes, the group has been putting flyers on the bonnets of cars they see parking badly in a bid to put the behaviour to a stop.

They have now got the support of the Shropshire Disability Network, who say many of their members have called them to talk about the problems they face.
