A 25-home development in a Shropshire village has been delayed due to fears over noise and traffic.

The plan for land east of Wem Road in Shawbury will only be given the green light once a planning officer at Shropshire Council is satisfied concerns have been met by applicants Acton Reynald Estate Trustees.

Shawbury Parish Council has objected after claiming children would walk along Wem Road and then have to cross the busy A53 to get to a nearby primary school.

RAF Shawbury has also raised concerns regarding the noise levels affecting the new homes.

Station commander Group Captain Alastair Smith said: "It is important to acknowledge that the MoD supports the principle of new residential development in the area. However, in these circumstances, we wish to outline our concerns.

"We have co-operated fully with the request for access to complete a noise survey.

"Should the local planning authority grant planning permission for this site, the MoD/RAF will bear no responsibility for any complaints or claims from new residents in respect of matters of noise and will refer the complainants to the developer and Shropshire Council."

The RAF stated that the noise levels in the original report were not typical due to minimal flying activities during the survey, in particular no or little night time flying.

The plans were discussed by Shropshire Council's north planning committee.

Councillor Simon Jones, Shropshire councillor for Shawbury, said: "There is no proven local need for this site."

But Councillor Gerald Dakin said: "Shawbury is now a major village which has plenty of amenities. It can take more homes and I think this development is sustainable." A new noise survey will now be carried out before a decision is made.
