Excitement builds in run-up to Shropshire County Show

This year's Shropshire County Show will be unveiling some surprises as well as welcoming back some old favourites when the gates open for the crowds.

Thousands of people are expected to pour into the showground off Berwick Road in Shrewsbury for one of the oldest agricultural shows in the county on May 23.

Organisers say many trade exhibitors have already booked their spots for this year's event, which is offering free entry for children aged 11 and under.

Ian Bebbington, the general manager responsible for the running of the showground, said: "The signs are already very positive with many trade exhibitors already having booked their spots. It is good to see such enthusiasm to return again this year as well as new traders coming for the first time.

"We have Steve Colley, who is a stunt motorcycle rider, falconry displays, tractor pulling, an Edible Shropshire food zone and free kids' activities. Of course there are the agricultural machinery displays as well as hundreds of farm animals, many to be judged in competition. The show also incorporates the Shropshire County Horse Show and a dog show."

Organisers also say the show helps to bring important revenue to the local economy with hotels, B&Bs, bars, restaurants and camp sites benefiting from the large influx of visitors.

Healthy attendances at events at the ground and a deal for Greenhous to become the venue's principal sponsor have sparked a turnaround in fortunes, according to trustees of Shropshire and West Midlands Agricultural Society.

Mr Bebbington added: "We were delighted to be approached by Greenhous to be our first main sponsor and would welcome other businesses to partner with us. We now look forward to the new 2015 season with what we hope will be a wonderful County Show.

"If 2015 can match the success of 2014 I will be delighted but as always both I and my colleagues with a spring in our steps will want even more successes."
