Work began in Ketley in September to put in place a new electricity pylon and nearly 2,500 feet of underground cables to connect it to the main power supply.

New electric pylons being erected

The upgrade is being carried out next to Ketley Brook roundabout, close to Wrekin Retail Park and junction 6 of the M54.

Mick Dunne, Western Power Distribution project manager in the area, said: "It ensures that we can provide a high level of service to these areas in the long term. This will improve the infrastructure and security of our electricity network."

The company has said that the work will also make it easier to further develop power supplies in the area in the future.

Mr Dunne said when the new facilities were up and running, three other pylons would be taken down because they would no longer be needed.

Western Power will also remove nearly 3,000 feet of overhead cables which currently run over both the M54 and the Wrekin Retail Park, he said.

The work is expected to be completed by the end of this year, with Western Power Distribution workers being assisted by engineers from Babcock International PLC.

The project is part of a series of investments nationwide, on which Western Power aim to spend around £7 billion between 2015 and 2023.
