The law change will begin on October 1 when it will become an offence for drivers and passengers in England to smoke in private vehicles when carrying a child under the age of 18.

Karen Calder, Shropshire Council's Cabinet member for health, said: "The only effective way to protect children is to prevent them breathing second-hand smoke.

"In light of the new regulations, I would urge those who do smoke to consider the risk to their child's health."

Dr Penny Woods, chief executive of the British Lung Foundation, said: "After years of campaigning, we could not be more delighted by the Government's commitment to stop smoking in cars with children present."
