North planning committee officers at Shropshire Council are recommending the proposals for a site off the A49 in Hadnall are given the go-ahead.

The plans, submitted by Sansaw Estates and Galliers Homes, include the provision of public open space, a car park and restoration of the moat. They have been amended since first submission to ensure that access is only via Station Road in the village.

The plans also originally included a bowling green within the moat and adjacent club house, but this has been removed following advice from English Heritage and Shropshire Council archaeologists, who support the restoration of the moat.

A public meeting was held in October where 71 residents discussed the scheme with the applicant.

Residents in Hadnall have recently been overwhelmed with new homes with potentially 124 being given the go-ahead, representing a 38 per cent growth of the parish and 72 per cent growth in the village.

Jane Whittaker, Hadnall parish clerk, said: "This cumulative impact is an unacceptable growth rate within a short time period. It would substantially change the character of the village irrevocably."

The council voted by majority to object to the proposed scheme. There have also been 24 public letters of objection.

But case officer Jane Raymond said in the report: "On balance it is considered that the proposal represents sustainable development."

The plans will be discussed at Shirehall in Shrewsbury at 2pm on Tuesday.
