Ricky Steventon, 23, became enraged when his ex-girlfriend came to his home in Westbourne in Woodside, Telford, with two friends to collect possessions she had left at the house, Shrewsbury Crown Court heard.

After trying to calm Steventon down the woman fled and called the police. But Stevenson called out: "If the coppers come I will knife them – you think I'm joking," the court was told.

When officers arrived they saw Steventon brandishing a six-inch silver kitchen knife and goading them by saying "come on". They ordered him to drop the weapon and the man gave himself up.

Steventon, who now lives in Tipton, West Midlands, admitted affray and also a charge of possessing a blade in a public place after an incident in Wolverhampton in 2010.

He had heard a 14-year-old boy using abusive language on a mobile phone and believed the words were aimed at him.

He had pulled out a knife and shown it to the teenager.

Steventon was sentenced to four months in prison for each offence to run consecutively but the jail term was suspended for two years.
