Jobs safe as Shropshire's Tesco branches saved

Tesco workers in Shropshire have breathed a sigh of relief after the chain confirmed it would not close any branches in Shropshire.

Earlier this month, Britain's biggest grocer revealed it was to close 43 unprofitable branches as part of a raft of measures aimed at turning around the group's fortunes.

And the company has now confirmed that none of those branches will be in Shropshire. It The company is to close three branches in the Black Country, with the loss of 80 jobs.

Tesco chief executive Dave Lewis said: "In January I announced that our performance as a business has fallen significantly short of where we would want it to be and that to protect the future of the business we would close 43 unprofitable stores."

Among its Shropshire branches, Tesco has stores in Shrewsbury, Telford, Ellesmere, Ludlow, Whitchurch, Welshpool and Bridgnorth, including a number of Express outlets which were considered to be facing the greatest risk of closure.

In total, the company has more than 3,000 stores in the UK, but is set to axe 2,000 jobs as it dispenses with its unprofitable branches.
