Concern over impact of planned Lidl store on Oswestry

A proposed new Lidl supermarket could pull shoppers away from Oswestry town centre, a councillor has warned.

Councillor Duncan Kerr, of Oswestry Town Council, said there were sites closer to the town centre for a new superstore than the planned site on Victoria Road occupied by JT Hughes car dealership. The Lidl store would form part of a small retail park with three other shops.

Councillor Kerr, speaking at last night's town council meeting, said statistics had been provided by other supermarkets in the town – including Morrisons, which is building on a new leisure complex at the former Smithfield livestock market edge of town.

Members agreed to write to Shropshire Council planners to let them know their concerns, but to broadly support Lidl's application.
