The thefts happened in Blakemore, Brookside, and effected five homes on the estate.

One resident, Peter Wilson, aged 41 said this was very unusual and he does not think this sort of crime has happened in the area before.

"They tried to take mine, because I could hear the door rattling, but I have two dogs and they must have disturbed them," he said. "It must have happened in the early hours of the morning, because I was awake looking after my grandchild when I heard them.

"When everyone woke up in the morning they were asking if your door handle had been taken - it was really strange. This is very unusual for the area as it hasn't happened before."

PCSO Chris Barrett, from Brookside SNT, said: "One victim closed her front door at around 9pm on Tuesday, and she was later disturbed by a noise at her door.

"She discovered that the heavy metal door knob had been stolen. Her immediate neighbour also had his door knob tampered with and we have had another report of another door being tampered with."

The thefts happened on Tuesday, January 20 and police are asking for people with any information to call 101.
