The couple have bought Cyfronydd Hall in the countryside between Welshpool and Llanfair Caereinion.

Montgomeryshire MP, Glyn Davies, welcome the news and said the couple would feel very much at home in the area.

Mrs Hague's father was born in Montgomeryshire and the MP was Welsh Secretary in the 1990s.

Former Foreign Secretary Mr Hague, now Leader of the House, whose constituency is in Yorkshire, is stepping down from parliament at the next election.

A spokesman for the couple said: "Mr Hague has now purchased a home in Wales and is very much looking forward to moving there with Ffion, who is of course Welsh herself. They are very fond of Wales."

She said that the couple would also be keeping a house in Yorkshire.

Montgomeryshire MP and friend of the couple, Glyn Davies, said they would be welcomed in Montgomeryshire.

"I'm really pleased that William and Ffion have decided to set up their family home in Montgomeryshire. Ffion's father was a Montgomeryshire man so she has family roots here, and William is hugely popular throughout Wales.

"At a personal level, both William and Ffion are good friends of mine, and over future years they will become good friends of Montgomeryshire.

"Cyfronydd Hall is close to where I live, and is well known as a local landmark near Welshpool. I remember it as Girls School, which I passed every day en-route to Ysgol Uwchradd Caereinion.

"Over recent years Cyfronydd Hall has been beautifully restored, and it's great news for the area that it is now the family home of William and Ffion Hague, two people whom I expect to become acclaimed authors."I believe they will feel very much at home in our beautiful old county."

"It's also good news for those of us who support Montgomeryshire Conservatives. All of us work hard for Montgomeryshire, and it's hugely encouraging that we will have one of the UK's most outstanding and popular politicians of recent years coming to live amongst us, as he moves into his new career as an author."

The hall, which had an asking price of £2.5 million when it was put on the market in 2013.
