The railway bridge at Castle Foregate was blocked for several hours after the lorry, which was carrying a large skip, became wedged underneath it just before 3.30pm yesterday.

Firefighters attended to make the scene safe. No-one was hurt in the incident but the traffic became gridlocked with queues backing up along St Michael's Street, Ellesmere Road and along Smithfield Road and into Frankwell, Copthorne and The Mount.

The lorry was removed at 6pm.

Drivers not caught up in the gridlock faced long diversions via the town's inner ring road and Telford Way, which also became congested.

Trains were also affected.

Rail services between Shrewsbury and Crewe were unable to run while Network Rail engineers inspected the bridge.

Once the lorry was removed at 6pm council workers then had to remove debris before the road could be reopened.

Meanwhile, there were two accidents within minutes of each other on the new Mile End roundabout on the edge of Oswestry yesterday.

The incidents happened at about 8.30am on the island. No-one was injured. Sergeant Lee Johnson urged drivers to take care.
