Letter: We've been part of Europe since the Roman invasion

In reply to letters from Denis Allen and Bob Wydell (Shropshire Star, January 2) and concerning the Common Market, EU or whatever else we choose to label it.

I would like to take this story to its original concept whereby during Romanisation and since the time of Emperor Claudius when we became a colony of Rome, this allowed us to trade with Europe and the Mediterranean.

All this before we eventually became firstly England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, later the United Kingdom, or Great Britain.

As this was without any charges to support our neighbours within Europe, and was probably why we became one of the richest countries in the world.

Now, unfortunately, we have a welfare state which supports people who feel this country owes them a living. Paid for by those who have the moral backbone to go out and earn an honest living, and pay taxes which are squandered by successive and totally inept governments.

The EU and the euro are like a failing business where good money is thrown in after bad results so weighing down an already sinking ship. We managed well enough before and we can again. Pull out of it now before the people of our once proud and leading country sink their heads further in shame because of the mistakes of our past and present politicians.
