Prominent Shrewsbury building could become student accommodation

A towering building in the centre of Shrewsbury could be transformed into student halls for the town's university, under new plans.

Mardol House, the former home of the county court, could become apartments for 85 students, if Shropshire Council's vision gets the go ahead.

The space above outdoor shop Blacks between Shoplatch and Claremont Street which adjoins the Market Hall is now an empty office block.

The council, which owns the freehold, has submitted an application to convert part of the building into living quarters for the new University Centre Shrewsbury.

Bosses at the authority hope the arrival of university students will bring a boost to the town centre economy when they visit the shops, cafes, bars and clubs.
