A popular weekly run had to be cancelled at the last minute after a tree fell down across the route.

The tree collapsed across a footpath in Telford Town Park barely 15 minutes before runners were due to start their weekly parkrun in the area.

The events can attract up to 250 participants and Saturday morning's run was being hosted and marshalled by Wrekin Road Runners.

It came after the county had been battered by heavy winds the night before.

Run director Kim Fawke-Williams said: "The tree came down across the path about 15 minutes before the run was due to start.

"We had to consider the possibility of another tree coming down as people were running by, and while it was disappointing the health and safety of our volunteers and runners has to come first."

She added other runs had been called off before Christmas due to icy conditions.
