BAE Systems says it will take on more than 700 apprentices in the coming year – the highest intake in the company's history – including a trainee boost for its Combat Vehicles factory in Telford.

Two thirds of the new recruits will be working in engineering-related roles and they will all work across 14 sites in the UK, joining the business in September.

BAE is also hoping to increase its number of female applicants for the apprenticeship roles.

More than half the 710 new apprentices will work at BAE's submarine design and manufacturing site at Barrow-in-Furness, working on the next five Astute class attack submarines and developing the new Successor submarines due to replace the Vanguard ballistic missile vessels in 2029.

Six apprentices will be recruited for the Combat Vehicles maintenance business at the Hadley Castle Works in Telford.

Richard Hamer, education director and head of early career programmes at BAE Systems, said: "As well as reflecting the workload at our sites, our year-on-year increase in apprentice recruitment reflects the continued success of our training programmes in developing skilled and committed employees who are highly valued by the business.

"Our apprentices have a fantastic track record of reaching the highest leadership positions at BAE Systems with the MD of our military aircraft business beginning his career as an apprentice."
