Three men and a woman were taken to hospital with minor injuries after the crash on the A5 westbound near the Emstrey Roundabout, Shrewsbury, at about 12.50pm yesterday.

A BMW, a Citroen Berlingo and an Audi A3 were involved in the accident with a lorry.

The road was closed between the Preston and Emstrey Islands for almost five hours whilst emergency services worked at the scene. Firefighters used cutting and spreading equipment to help to free two people who were trapped. A vet treated a dog at the scene before taking it away to be checked over further.

Suzie Wheaton from the West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: "A man and a woman from one car, who were in their 40s, were treated for back pain. They were both immobilised and taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

"Two other patients, both males in their late 50s early 60s, were treated for minor chest injuries and were taken to Princess Royal Hospital."

The crash caused delays on roads in the area. The A5 was reopened at about 5.30pm.
