Police seek help to identify mystery man found dead in Shropshire canal lock

Police have released a description of the mystery man whose body was found in a canal lock in Shropshire

Officers are investigating what happened to the man, who was believed to be in his late 50s or early 60s and was found in a lock on the Shropshire Union Canal in Grindley Brook, near Whitchurch, on Monday morning.

Natasha Kaur, spokeswoman for West Mercia Police said: "The man was wearing boots, black trousers, a green fleece and a Berghaus backpack.

"Anyone who thinks they saw anything suspicious around that area should inform the police."

The man's identity remains a mystery and formal identification has not yet taken place.

Police sealed off the area outside the Lockside Cafe and along the canal on Monday after a member of the public found the body at about 9.40am.

Three police cars, three fire engines and an ambulance were all parked along the side of the road into the village on the bridge over the canal.

People around Grindley Brook have spoken of their shock since the news, and some have offered condolences to the man's family.

Jane and David Beaumont, owners of the cafe, said: "Our sincere condolences go out to the family, whoever it might be.

"We are so very sorry for them and our thoughts are with them."
