Floodwaters were receding across Shropshire and Mid Wales today but the county remained on flood alert with a forecast for more rain this week.

Frankwell car park in Shrewsbury was closed for a time at the weekend although much of the car park had reopened by last night.

The constant rain of last week, particularly in Mid Wales, once again swelled river levels in the county town and Christmas shoppers were urged to use the park and ride service instead on one of the busiest shopping days of the year.

The Environment Agency prepared for flooding by erecting low level flood barriers at Frankwell for the second weekend running.

Severn Trent also took precautions, setting up pumps near to the river to deal with any problems.

However, the town escaped any major flooding.

Last night flood watches remained in place in the region, along the River Severn, the Severn/Vyrnwy confluence and the River Dee above and below Llangollen.

However, a flood watch was taken off the upper Severn in Mid Wales with hopes this would mean lower river levels further downstream today.
