One lane of Holyhead Road in Ketley was shut on Tuesday afternoon at its junction with the Ketley Brook roundabout and lengthy diversion routes put in place, causing delays and traffic chaos for motorists.

It is expected to remain closed until at least the end of the week.

Jeanette Unsworth, for National Grid, said: "We've got engineers on site working to repair a gas escape on a low pressure gas main. We do appreciate that this is causing problems for motorists but we have to put safety first."

Telford & Wrekin Council spokesman Russell Griffin said: "We will strive to get it reopened as quickly as possible."
